Recently, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, together with the Guangdong Mechanical Engineering Society, organized a scientific and technological achievement appraisal meeting in Shenzhen in a hybrid online‑offline format. The project entitled R&D and Application of Key Technologies and Equipment for Intelligent Manufacturing of Dry Electrodes was jointly completed by Shenzhen Tsingyan Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., GAC AION New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd., Tsingyan Nake Intelligent Equipment Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., Tsinghua‑Shenzhen International Graduate School, and Guangdong University of Technology.

The meeting was presided over and concluded by Professor Liu Yihua, entrusted by the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. Deputy Director Liu Huirong from the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society attended and delivered remarks via Tencent Meeting.

The appraisal committee was chaired by Academician Lian Yubo from BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd., with Professor‑level Senior Engineer Liu Shi, Chief Expert of the National New‑Energy Storage Innovation Center, serving as deputy chair. It also comprised distinguished experts and professors from Xiangtan University, China Electric Apparatus Research Institute Co., Ltd., Sun Yat‑sen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and China University of Mining and Technology (Shenzhen Institute).

Representatives of the project‑undertaking organizations presented the project development report.
Targeting key bottlenecks in dry‑electrode manufacturing including poor consistency, low production efficiency and challenging precision control, the project investigated core preparation technologies for dry electrodes and developed complete sets of manufacturing equipment. Its major innovations are summarized below:
A preparation method for surface modification of highly‑dispersed PTFE was developed, establishing a “rigid‑flexible synergy” multi‑component composite binder design system. This addresses core challenges such as uneven material mixing, unstable pore‑structure and weak interfacial bonding during dry‑electrode fabrication, and greatly improves electrode sheet consistency, mechanical integrity and electrochemical stability.
An integrated structural design approach featuring “multi‑stage blind‑hole array + chemically‑modified wetting + transverse mechanical reinforcement” was proposed. It systematically solves common pain points of thick electrodes: poor electrolyte wetting, low initial Coulombic efficiency and insufficient transverse mechanical strength. Synergistic optimization of thick‑electrode interfacial kinetics, electrochemical performance and forming stability has been realized.

A multi‑variable full‑closed‑loop intelligent control system covering “pressure‑roll gap‑tension‑temperature” was developed. It stabilizes the axial and circumferential temperature uniformity of wide‑width hot rollers within ±1 °C, fundamentally guaranteeing high compactness and superior uniformity of electrode sheets.
The world‑first wide‑width high‑speed dry‑electrode roll‑to‑roll integrated continuous manufacturing process and complete equipment adopting “dual‑side simultaneous film‑forming‑hot‑press lamination” was created. Through deep integration of process technology, machinery, control systems and simulation, high‑efficiency, stable and low‑cost production of dry electrodes is achieved.

During project execution, 17 invention patents and 16 utility‑model patents were granted. The team led and participated in formulating 7 national, industrial and association standards, with fully independent intellectual property rights.
Products stemming from this project have been successfully deployed both domestically and overseas, delivering remarkable economic and social benefits.
The appraisal committee concluded that the project involves high technical complexity and prominent innovation. Its overall technology reaches the international advanced level. Specifically, the wide‑width high‑speed dry‑electrode roll‑to‑roll integrated continuous intelligent manufacturing technology of “dual‑side simultaneous film‑forming‑hot‑press lamination” attains the international leading level.
The project was approved for passing the scientific and technological achievement appraisal.
